Construction of The Knickerbocker on the Lake began in 1929 and continued four years until the official grand opening. When opened in 1933, The Knickerbocker provided apartment style accommodations with full kitchens and individual private baths. Fine events for groups ranging from 300 to 600 people were hosted in an elegant ballroom. A commissary located on the main floor sold fresh meats, fruits and vegetables to guests. A bookshop featured rare and out of print books, and a gift shop sold glassware, china and knickknacks.
A "Ladies" lounge furnished in early colonial style accommodated afternoon teas and games of Bridge for hotel guests. A beauty salon and exclusive gown shops completed the amenities of the "modern" hotel. In the 50's the ladies lounge was converted to the Red Lion Room, a "Men Only" lounge. The club featured nightly entertainment and showcased artists such as Sammy Davis Jr. Soon thereafter, the second floor of the hotel was redeveloped into the Juneau Club and for $325-$425/ month residents would receive a furnished apartment, three meals a day, housekeeping service and 24 hour emergency medical call service.
From the mid 70's to the early 90's, the building was converted into a condominium complex. Currently, each condominium is individually owned, and the hotel accommodations are located among the permanent residents, creating a welcoming ambiance.
Each uniquely decorated guest room provides a genuine homelike atmosphere. From Victorian to contemporary design concepts, our newly renovated rooms and suites include a fully furnished kitchen, free high-speed internet service, digital cable, voicemail, hairdryer, iron and ironing board. Some of our suites offer breathtaking views of Lake Michigan. Bed and Breakfast accommodations are available upon request.
